June 2020 – Intrepid, with a sense of adventure and discovery. Young Dutchman Bas Baaten recounts on his website (thelongestroad2017.wordpress.com) that as a child he dreamed of becoming an explorer, later discovering that he had been born “a few centuries late for that”. Given the fact that the entire world has already been discovered in the third millennium, Bas studied travel and tourism, with the idea of working abroad as a tour guide, in the meantime working in a clothing shop as a scuba instructor. He alternated his tranquil (“so predictable”) days in the shop dreaming of adventure with backpacking journeys (“such unpredictable days: you start the day without knowing where you will end up”), with the boundless Asia as his destination. And so, he did a great tour of Southeast Asia in 2014 where, after commonplace travel on trains and other transportation, he got a taste of that unquenchable freedom of motorcycle travel, riding 2,000 km through Vietnam.

That unforgettable trip, Bas says, inspired him for the next one, even more ambitious and demanding, completed three years ago in 2017, from May through December.

From Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, this time astride a spectacular vintage Moto Guzzi California III (1993 model) ready for anything and everything. A romantic final note: “As I prepared for my trip... I met Lisa, the love of my life, who happily supports me as I follow my dream. And fortunately, our love knows no limits!”
