Verona, 18 January 2020 - With the opening of registration for the 2020 Italian FMI Aprilia Sport Production Championship, the Aprilia “School of Champions” is reborn. The new national championship, greatly desired by Aprilia Racing and Federazione Motociclistica Italiana (Italian Motorcycle Federation), a unique history is picked back up which saw the bikes from Noale accompany and launch into motorcycle racing entire generations of very young people and groom top shelf champions like Max Biaggi, Loris Capirossi and Valentino Rossi.

The project falls perfectly in line with the FMI chain dedicated to the very young which starts from minibikes and goes all the way to the National Speed Championship, representing a brand new offer on the Italian scene. The strong points are the accessible costs, the direct involvement of Aprilia Racing and a bike conceived specifically to make the growth of young talent easy and gradual.

Participating in the races will be girls and guys from eleven years of age up astride the Aprilia RS 250 SP, designed and developed by Aprilia Racing in collaboration with Ohvale for use on the track. Powered by a single cylinder 4-stroke 250 engine, the Aprilia SP 250 exploits all the know-how and technology of the Noale Racing Department and features the best racing components - Öhlins suspension, Brembo brakes, SC Project exhaust - in the search for the best weight/power ratio, weighing in at 35 Kg less than the RS 125 street model. The 17” Marchesini rims will be Pirelli-shod. This is a high level of technical features that is an integral part of the technical regulations with the goal of maintaining as level a playing field as possible so that it will be the riders with their talent that shines through and not the different preparation of the vehicles being raced.

Produced by technical partner Ohvale - a Veneto-based leader in the small motorcycle market - the Aprilia RS 250 sells for the extremely competitive price of €9,700 plus VAT, a number that contributes to achieving the most important objective of the FMI Aprilia Sport Production Championship, namely to make motorcycle racing accessible to range of enthusiasts that is as vast as possible.

To participate in the Italian FMI Aprilia Sport Production Championship, riders simply need to be at least 11 years old and possess the FMI Miniroad licence (up to 13 years of age) or the FMI Speed licence (from 14 years old). Registering is as simple as going online to www.civ.tv and filling in the specific forms available in the CIV Junior section. Registering in the Championship has a discounted cost of €1,200 plus VAT, whereas registering for the individual races (wild card) has a cost of €250 Euro plus VAT. The Italian FMI Aprilia Sport Production Championship will become part of a sports growth and promotion project managed by Aprilia Racing which is the first step in every professional career. In the same spirit, Federmoto will offer the winner of the 2020 edition free registration in a 2021 FMI Championship.

The first edition of the new championship will fall within the Campionato Italiano Velocità - CIV Junior 2020 (Italian Speed Championship – Junior 2020) and will be carried out on a calendar of five rounds, each of which anticipates two races preceded by two free practice sessions and two qualifying sessions. It will begin in Varano on 7 June, followed by the dates in Modena (5 July), Magione (19 July), Ortona (6 September) and Adria (19 October). Before the start of the championship, a day of tests is scheduled - free and compulsory for all registered riders. It will be a truly special day and on a world renowned circuit - Mugello - which will be held on Saturday 9 May to correspond with the big Aprilia All Stars festival. This way, all the young riders on the starting grid will have the chance to take their first steps with the RS 250 SP followed by federal technicians and “coach” riders made available by Aprilia Racing.

Giovanni Copioli, FMI President: “After unveiling the bike in November in Milan, it is with great satisfaction that we present the Italian FMI Aprilia Sport Production Championship for 2020. An ambitious project, created together with Aprilia Racing, for a new championship that will fall within CIV Junior. A competition which, thanks to the presence of the manufacturer from Noale, will allow us to improve our constant commitment to training young people, also representing important training grounds for future champions. A project that confirms the synergy with the entire Piaggio Group, already highlighted by the good results of the Moto Guzzi Fast Endurance Trophy.”

Massimo Rivola, Aprilia Racing CEO: “It’s finally time to go! For Aprilia Racing, this is an exceptionally important moment. We are getting back to speaking with youth and getting them out on the track to have fun, cultivating a passion in search of new talent. And we are doing it in the best possible way - with a bike conceived to let new riders grow gradually, ensuring maximum fun for all and with an extraordinary partner like the Federazione Motociclistica Italiana. It will be a true championship that will have an extraordinary prologue on 9 May in Mugello. Our kids will test the bike on one of the most beautiful tracks in the world and surrounded by the atmosphere of the big Aprilia All Stars festival and by great champions who have written world motorcycle racing history. I don’t think I could imagine a more thrilling début.
